A SAD SPACE COP
Miller's jumpsuits are an off-olive shade and he is never without his communication device. He wears his hair in a short fauxhaux style until it grows out and he's too lazy to fix it. He goes a few days between shaving usually (and showering.) Miller is used to conserving water because of the water-rationing on Ceres and is constantly paranoid they will run out of water or air on the Terminal. He drinks a lot, doesn't eat very much, and will be found most often in the bar, his room, or pacing Deck 3. He takes off his magboots when in his quarters always - he was raised in low G and zero G doesn't bother him really. Miller is depressed and as such suicidal thoughts or actions may come up. I will always CW for these themes, but if you would prefer I tone them down or opt out altogether, please let me know. He also very obviously has alcoholism, so same thing there. Also of note is the implanted port on his left upper arm that pushes a steady flow of cancer drugs into his system.

A HISTORY: CONTAINS SPOILERS
Miller was raised on Ceres as a ward of the state. He had no parents and ended up on the street at a young age. He met Sematimba and the two became fast friends and were always running a scheme to feed themselves and the other orphans. When Joe came of age, Sema asked him "Do you want to be the ass or the boot?" and they both became cops for Star Helix, and from there ranked up to detectives. They were partners until Sematimba was let go for "losing his head." When he leaves for Eros, he gives Joe his hat as a reminder to not make the same mistakes he did. At series open Miller is saddled with a new partner: an Earther who wants desperately to fit in with Belters. Joe tells him that he'll never be one of them, even while he's called Welwala by those around him (Belter for traitor to your people.) His partner immediately reads him as unhinged and immoral, but Miller does have his own set of ethics that he abides by. And when he's given Julie Mao's case (a kidnap job) he starts to unravel a mystery far larger than himself. He's fired under similar circumstances as Sematimba and he ventures to Eros after discovering it was the last place Julie was seen. Venturing to Eros is Miller's first time off Ceres and he's nervous to travel in space. He chats with a Mormon on his transport who tells him about the holy ship the Nauvoo docked at Tycho station. When he gets to Eros, he finds Julie just not in the state he expected. The protomolecule has torn up her nervous system and left a grisly scene for him to find. But he's not alone - the crew of the "legitimately salvaged" Rocinante are also on Eros, trying to get to the root of their own mystery. Joe ends up teaming up with Holden while the others try to save people who have been infected the way Julie (graphic image) was. They accidentally wander into a radiation den and get cancer so they get delayed finding cancer drugs on their way back to the Roci and during that time a dispute breaks out between Sematimba and Naomi about waiting for Miller and Holden to return. He pulls out a gun and Amos shoots him before he can shoot Naomi. This makes things initially rocky between Miller and Amos, but once they "square up" (aka Miller gets his ass beat) they are cordial. The OPA and the Roci crew formulate a plan to return to Eros with a "Strike Force" to find the scientists who were using 100,000 Belters as a way to test the protomolecule on human subjects. Miller earns the chagrin of Holden and his crew by shooting the lead scientist deadand loses his bunk on the ship as a result. Sometime later, Miller pitches an idea to slingshot the Nauvoo into Eros in order to push it towards the Sun. He volunteers to go there and set nuclear charges on the docks so that no one could ever land there again and become infected with the protomolecule. Everyone is shocked when the Nauvoo misses, but it isn't because they made a mistake. It's because Eros, inexplicably, is moving. Miller loses the detonation switch to a bomb and decides to venture into the Station about the same time the Roci falls behind Eros and it's becoming obvious it will be a one-way trip. He follows the blue lights and Julie's voice back to the Blue Falcon (the hotel where Julie died.) It's here he first meets Julie, though she's already dead, the protomolecule has taken over her image and a limited form of her consciousness. Dreaming that she was aboard her racing ship the Razorback heading back home (Earth) is what set a collision course that would have led to the total destruction of life on Earth altogether. Miller convinces her to reroute to Venus and he remains with her until Eros burns up in the volatile atmosphere. On Reverie Station, Miller remembers up until lighting the first charge, but has been filled in by the Roci's crew about his subsequent death. | |
