We were discussing my capacity to make mistakes.

As for the last week or so, I've learned a little more about you. You were willing to try to help me... even though it didn't benefit you. Despite what you say, you were concerned about leaving me paralyzed in that corridor. And you requested that I contact you when I was able to again.

That may not seem very significant to you, Miller, but it was something I didn't know about you before... especially considering your habit of calling me by common kitchen appliances instead of my name.

[Have a very human looking little smile.]

    I've never heard that before.

But I don't dislike having a nickname. [Even if someone who didn't know either of them could easily misinterpret the nickname as derogatory, Connor liked it. He was pretty sure that if Miller didn't like him, he wouldn't have these nicknames for him. But maybe he was wrong.

Regardless, Miller had shown his real colors, and it had been appreciated.]

Let me know if there's anything I can do for you while you finish recovering.

That's correct, yes. I'm designed to help with all facets of an investigation, from crime scene investigation to perpetrator apprehension and interrogation.

[He repeated it like he hadn't already told Miller that more than once, tone pleasant and neutral as ever.]

I'd be happy to assist you.

[The response was immediate, though he paused afterward and frowned.]

Miller, may I ask you a question? [Another brief pause, a very brief pause, hardly waiting for Miller to actually agree.] Do you feel... discouraged at all? I mean, regarding the occurrences on board and finding a possible cause for them. They feel... unexplainable. Impossible, even.

[Connor's expression shifted, looking almost... sad. It was a complex mix of concern and hopelessness, and fighting that feeling of hopelessness.

He gave Miller a somber, but determined, nod.]

Returning home is my objective as well and our probability of success is much greater if we work together.

    Unfortunately, no.

I've gone over the recordings found and the data we have, but there just aren't any answers in it. It feels like there is a lot of evidence but that no definite conclusions can be drawn from it.

There's no way to predict the strange occurrences, only react to and recover from them.

There also doesn't seem to be a way to test theories and no one theory fully explains everything.

I've seen some evidence that when we disappear from this place, we reappear where we were, but there doesn't seem to be any consistent length of time between a person's appearance here and their disappearance.

And I don't think either of us will be satisfied with simply waiting the Station out.

[Connor tilts his head slightly, actually giving his answer some thought.]

    In a way.

I was designed to accomplish tasks. I will continue to try to accomplish the task set out before me until I succeed.

I'm not sure if that qualifies as 'feeling' satisfied or not, but doing nothing but waiting isn't really working towards accomplishing anything.

I believe I've felt something similar to frustration, however. [Since Miller seemed so interested in his inner thoughts and feelings it seemed like a reasonable thing to share with him.] Failing seems to have a very distinct... sting to it. I don't like failing.

If it's something you're experienced in, do you have any advice regarding how to best deal with the feelings of frustration?

[Because Miller obviously had his shit together.]

    [personal profile] rk800connor 2018-09-19 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes... Oh. [He frowned slightly, LED flickering thoughtfully.] But you indicated that you had ample experience with failure. I was simply hoping that you might have some advice...

    [personal profile] rk800connor 2018-09-24 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Do you feel as though you don't handle failure well?

[His tone was completely neutral, sounding almost detached. It seemed pretty obvious that Miller was mostly avoiding his request; Connor just didn't completely understand why, and he wanted to.]

[Connor, once again, looks slightly discouraged, LED flickering yellow as he tried to figure out where he'd gone wrong.]

    I apologize.

I thought...- You said you were experienced in dealing with failure. I thought maybe...-

    Again. I apologize.
